COMPENSATION:
Commensurate based on experience.
 
SUMMARY:
Our Rare Books Department is seeking a Cataloguer to describe property for upcoming catalog and online auctions. Includes researching, identifying, and accurately describing rare books, manuscripts, prints, maps, and ephemera.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Write factually accurate catalog descriptions of rare books, historical manuscripts, prints, maps, and related materials for upcoming auctions.
  • Effectively and efficiently research, identify, and navigate institutional/private databases and appropriately cite print/digital references.
  • Proof/edit description text and review images for catalog production.
  • Prioritize lots based on estimated values and determine the appropriate length of associated description copy.
  • Work with prospective bidders to help answer questions about lots as potential purchases at the auction.
  • Able to lift boxes of material up to 50 pounds.
  • Travel is possible for auctions, book fairs, etc., as needed.
  • Work the live auctions.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree required, major in English or History a plus.
  • A Library Science degree is a plus.
  • Experience in the book trade, auction house, special collections, or a related field is preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Individuals must be able to work independently in a fast-paced, team-focused environment with tight turnaround deadlines.
